March Math Madness
Sela's first ever March Math Madness event was a huge success. Students were able to experience a variety of fun math activities: collecting data, displaying it on a graph, analyzing and comparing it to other graphs, and creating geometric shapes. See pictures on our class website.
Student Extracurriculars
I know that student learning doesn't stop once that walk out Caesaria's doors. Many students are involved in team sports, martial arts, music, dance, and more: teaching them discipline, teamwork, and perseverance.
Life does get busy, but given the opportunity, I would love to support your child's growth the activities they like to do outside school. So please let me know if and when your child has an upcoming match or performance.
Additionally, if you are looking for something for your child to get involved with, I am forwarding along information from Heather Bramble (Jonah's Mom) and Jessica Lieberman (Ezekiel's Mom) (Thank you!) about a co-ed soccer clinic called The Academy that is run by DC Youth Futbol.
The fee is $150, and the spring season has just started! Jonah and Ezekiel are signed up for Tuesdays 4:00-5:15 and other classmates are invited to join.
Social Studies
We are currently learning about types of communities in Social Studies. Students are exploring rural, suburban and urban environments and had a blast sorting pictures of these communities into categories. See pictures on our class website.
To help our students examine their own communities, please take pictures (from a phone is fine) of the community you live in and send them in:
Please print out 3-5 pictures to send in with your child by Thursday, April 13th.
If you are unable to print them yourself, please email them to me and I will take care of it.

We are more than halfway through the school year, can you believe it? What is even more incredible is everything you donated at the beginning of the year has lasted us this long. THANK YOU!
A few items are running low, so I wanted to reach out to ask if any families would be willing and able to donate the following items:
- Paper towels (because classroom spills happen)
- Tissues (cold season is still around, and allergy season is overlapping)
- Wet wipes (because our fingers do get sticky, especially during breakfast)
We (the students and I) really appreciate any items you could give. Thanks again!

Social Studies and Black History Month
Now that we are in the third quarter, we are kicking off our first social studies unit.
Students will be learning about 7 historical figures who fought for a cause as well as important, modern day individuals who are making history right now. Each student will be randomly assigned a specific person and they will be gathering information about this individual's contributions through research. The assignment will culminate in a final presentation, date TBD. They will share facts about their person using traditional and multi-media tools with an audience of parents, teachers and schoolmates.
Mystery Reader Sign-UpsThe next available mystery reader dates are Friday, March 10th and Friday, March 24th.
Come foster your child's love of reading by sharing your OWN love of reading. Please sign up to be a mystery reader on a date that will work for you.
If you're not sure what to bring in to read, I can help make suggestions.

09.19.16- Class Parent List, Share Schedule, Testing, Conferences
Class Parent List
One idea we came up with at Back-to-School Night was to share our class families' emails. Please respond to my 09.19 email with "Yes, share my email" to opt-in to Class Caesaria's email list by Friday, September 23rd. I will only share this information with other families that opt-in.
Morning Meeting Share Schedule: Please have your child bring in a family photo on their share day. I can also print a copy of it if you email it to me the day before.
Monday, 9/19: Alexis
Tuesday, 9/20: Aaron
Wednesday, 9/21: Ziva
Thursday, 9/22: Isaiah
Friday, 9/23: Landen
Upcoming Testing:
At the beginning of the year, Sela uses assessments to determine baseline data on student skills and knowledge to inform our teaching throughout the year and measure student growth relative to where they started.
This week, our class will be testing on Wednesday and Thursday, so please ensure your student is on time and has breakfast because testing will begin promptly at 9:00 AM and we want our students to feel confident and ready. (School breakfast is served 8:15-8:30 AM).
This data will be shared with you during upcoming parent-teacher conferences.
Parent-Teacher Conferences
This brings me to my next update.
On the academic calendar, Friday, September 30th is a half-day for students with parent-teacher conferences scheduled for the afternoon.
Unfortunately, I will be out of town that day, but I am making myself available the following week before and after school, so I hope I can accommodate all families. Please see use this link through SignUp Genius to sign up for a date and time that works for you. Times are first come, first served
Tuesday Folders
Thank you for returning Tuesday folders promptly. If you have misplaced a clear plastic folder with your child's name on it, please let me know as soon as possible. We have a few extra at school, but those will be gone quickly.
These folders will have important updates throughout the year, so it is important that each child has one and you check it every Tuesday night.

Student Absences/Late Arrivals/Early Dismissals
We encourage students to be in school every day, however, we understand that students get sick or doctor's appointments or family emergencies come up. The best way to inform us of your child's absence or late arrival or early dismissal is by emailing me ([email protected]) and Ms. Kendria Smith at the front desk ([email protected]) when they will be absent and the reason why.
If a student is absent and Ms. Smith hasn't received a reason, then she will call families to check in on the student. So it would save us time if you can let us know as soon as possible if your student is absent.
Thank you!

Tuesday Folders

I also realized that a supply list was not included in the folder. Please find it on the Home Page.
Note on Tuesday Folders:
These Tuesday folders are clear plastic folders that students will bring home every Tuesday with announcements or forms from their teacher and the administration. Please take these notices Tuesday night, and return the folder empty to school the next day (Wednesday).
***Please return the Tuesday folder the next day (Wednesday)*** [I wrote this twice on purpose!]
If you forgot to return today (8/24), please return it by Friday of this week.
